REFLECTIONS: Racially inclusive church: a noble but illusive goal Bishop Woodie W. White, Oct 8, 2009

I had an interesting conversation recently with a student who is strongly committed to the existence of racially inclusive congregations. He wondered why United Methodist literature seems to say so little about what he believed to be a desired commitment of the denomination. While his observations and experiences are limited, he admits, he said it was a challenge to find such a congregation in which to worship.

He eventually located such a United Methodist congregation and is finding his experience rewarding. Upon completion of his seminary education, he would like to be appointed to such a congregation. We are having an ongoing conversation on the matter.

The racially inclusive congregation has long been one of the hoped-for products of our racially diverse denomination. It is a noble but often illusive goal. I have great admiration for those pastors and congregations working to bring people together in a worshipping community across racial and ethnic lines. It can be a challenge!
